Portugal’s a pretty flexible country – if you’ve been here long enough, you’ll see that while paperwork may be plentiful and processes may take time, people will always point you in the direction of your next step and help you where they can, and getting a Portuguese driving license is no different!
In fact, did you know that you can take your driving theory test in Portugal in a range of different languages? From English, French, and Spanish to Bengali, Mandarin, and Arabic, all you have to do is pick your language, find a registered translator, and inform the IMT. Then, on the day of the test, you’ll get your language of choice displayed alongside the Portuguese, helping you get one step closer to getting your Portuguese Driving License!
Whether you’re taking your driving theory test independently or through a school, this is how it works: Once you’re ready to take your test for the following types of license:
AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and B
you find a translator and get their paperwork. This is then added to your application to take your test – either your driving school can submit it for you, or you can send it to the exam centre directly. A date is booked, and you’ll need to pay a fee to the IMT. Then all that’ll be left to do is turn up on the day when you’ll be presented with a bilingual test – it’s as simple as that!
Beyond knowing that they can have their driving theory test translated, the biggest difficulty many people face is finding a translator registered with the IMT (the Portuguese Institute for Mobility and Transport) to do the translation, as only translators previously registered with the IMT may translate driving theory tests. However, the good news is that driving theory tests are translated remotely, so the translator doesn’t have to be local to you, or even in Portugal, to do it.
